Who we are

Filmed by Bike is a touring film festival that features the world’s best bike movies.

Every May we host our film festival in Portland, Oregon at the historic Hollywood Theatre.

Over the course of a busy weekend, we host filmmaker events, bike rides, after parties, and three days of film screenings.

Founded in 2003 in Portland, Oregon by Ayleen Crotty.

Filmed by Bike’s curated movie collections are inspiring. We send these collections all over the world through our Tour Program.

Show Filmed by Bike at your next event. Your community will leave the event inspired to ride their bike more! This creative and fun way to share your passion for bikes will grow your bike community.

Fostering Bike Filmmakers

Hundreds of international entries are submitted every year, and the very best (around 35) are featured in our programs. A panel of esteemed jurors helps us make those tough decisions.

Filmmakers from around the world flock to Portland for this spirited event, an opportunity to meet other filmmakers, share filmmaking tips and explore Portland by bike with local bike enthusiasts.

Filmed by Bike carves out positions of power, prominence and celebration to women and people of color throughout the fabric of our festival: on stage, on screen and on staff. The number of bicycle films by and about Black and Indigenous people and People of Color does not represent the community of people who love bikes. That’s why we created the BIPOC Grant Program, which awards financial grants to emerging filmmakers every year.

How Are Films Selected?

Entries are evaluated by an esteemed jury of bicycle and film enthusiasts from around the world. We accept jury nominations every fall so please subscribe to our newsletter. Film submissions are accepted year-round with deadlines for the annual festival listed on FilmFreeway.

We Support BIPOC Filmmakers

The Filmed by Bike BIPOC Filmmaker Grant Fund provides cash grants to emerging filmmakers so they can share their bicycle stories.

History

Filmed by Bike was founded in 2003 by artist Ayleen Crotty. The festival began at a micro-theater in Portland, Oregon, with an enthusiastic crowd of bike-loving attendees. More than twenty years later, Filmed by Bike has grown into a prestigious event within the global bike movement. In 2024, Ayleen passed the torch to new owners: filmmakers Alden Roth, Erik Douds, and their team of friends and family.
